Water From the Rock

Water From The Rock

Exodus 171-6
1And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.
2Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?
3And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
4And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.
5And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.
6Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

Part 1 (Sometimes we have to dwell in a dry hard place)

1And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

The desert region of Rephidim was historically one of the most fertile and well watered parts of this desert. Generally streams flowed with fresh cool water and trees bore fruit. In essence Rephidim was supposed to be an oasis for the people of God.

The children of Israel had just been living on Manna that was miraculously sent form God. Now they go to a place that should have been able to sustain them and find drier desert and no sustenance.

Sometimes when we think that we are in a place of provision and ease we find ourselves in a dry deserted place.

We travel through the desert and endure hardship and struggle only to find ourselves in a dry barren land with no carnal hope of provision….

1 Peter 1:3-8
3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, 5who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

When we walk in the will of God and face trials and times of dry and barren life it is our Faith that sustains us. Faith is strengthened by praise…Our first thought in trial should be to praise God for sustaining us…but it seems that we generally take a different approach.

Part 2 (When trials come our faith flees?)

When we Praise through our trial our Faith is strengthened and our Joy is sustained. We are not to be swayed by our situations. The life of a Child of God is to be one of Faith. Faith is not just our foundation but is our entire walk!!! It doesn’t matter what we can see or what is done to us Faith is our walk!!!

Hebrews 11: 1-10
1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. 2For by it the elders obtained a good report. 3Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. 4By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. 5By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. 7By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. 8By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
It is in our faith that God’s strength is perfected. We must walk in faith and act in faith and trust in faith in order to see the promises of God fulfilled in our lives. Not only does our Faith carry us but also our faith carries those around us. Just as Abraham’s faith sustained his entire family.
If our faith can sustain those around us then our lack of faith also affects those around us, including our family and everything that God has blessed us with. What did the Children of Israel say?
(3And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?)
Our lack of faith and giving voice to that lack of faith can condemn us to what we speak. We must stand in Faith.

Proverbs 18:20 - 21
20A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
21Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
According to God’s word we are accountable to our words and what we speak in our own lives. Remember that the Holy Spirit dwells with us and our words and move him to action as long as they line up with God’s word.

Part 3 (Sometimes we have to get away from the faithless and perform the work that God has given us)

We are the children of the Most High. We cannot continually operate in an atmosphere of unbelief and remain strong without the anointing. In order for our strength to be renewed we must get away from the faithless and weak so that our strength can be increased.

Our strength is renewed in 2 ways
1) Our time alone with God.
2) Our Time in the fellowship of like minded Christians.

Time alone with God
Luke 22:39-43
39Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." 41He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." 43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

Time with like-minded Christians

Matthew 18:20
20For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Acts 2:1-2
1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

Acts 2:46-47
46Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
We have to align ourselves with those who stand in Faith with us or we can never minister to those who do not believe.

Part 4 (When we stand in Faith God Stands with us)

6Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
God stands with his people for as long as they stand with him. When we stand in faith and refuse to back down from our enemy then God stands with us.
Exodus 17:8-13
8 The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands."
10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses' hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

Stand up and be counted for God. Don’t sit around with unbelievers and discuss the problems that you go through. Stand with those of Faith and proclaim the wonders of God and Praise his wonderful work and you will see Victory in your life.
